The 49ers offense is struggling to field talent this season as they continue to get hamstrung by injury. With Jimmy Garoppolo sidelined with a high ankle sprain for the foreseeable future, they’ll again turn to Nick Mullens and CJ Beathard. They’ve also signed veteran Josh Johnson to the practice squad as insurance, a sign that their starter will not be in the picture in weeks to come. Their injuries at the skill positions are well documented, and with 10 players hurt at running back, receiver and tight end they are down to their last legs. Jerick McKinnon, JaMycal Hasty and XFL speedster Austin Walter are their options in the backfield, and while Brandon Aiyuk and Kendrick Bourne are quality targets at wideout, their depth is bare. With George Kittle out, they’ll lean on Jordan Reed, but he has just returned from IR and has a significant injury history. Heading into New Orleans they’ll have to hope Kyle Shanahan can cook up ways to pace with Drew Brees & co.
