Saquon Barkley Leaves With Ankle Injury in First Quarter, Short IR Stint Possible

Star Giants running back Saquon Barkley injured his left ankle in the first quarter of the Week 5 game against the Cowboys. By video, Barkley steps on cornerback Jourdan Lewis' foot after an incomplete pass and suffers a significant inversion ankle sprain. He has a chance to return after getting his ankle taped, but it could be tough for him because he is still recovering from the ACL tear he suffered in his right knee last season.

Barkley suffered a high ankle sprain in his right ankle in 2019 and missed three games. First time ankle sprains do more damage, as evident by the swelling in his left ankle this time. We anticipate a short absence, possibly a short term IR stint. Looking at it optimistically, the right knee should be closer to full health when Barkley returns and we still believe he will have a strong second half of the season.

Update

Barkley was originally questionable to return, but has been ruled out. Devontae Booker will fill in at running back.
