Saquon Barkley, the Giants star running back, missed his second straight practice Thursday, but seems to be making good progress in his recovery from the Week 5 ankle injury. Barkley was in a boot after the game last Sunday, but appeared at a press conference Thursday without a boot or crutches. His left ankle was still heavily wrapped, but, by video, he walked without a noticeable limp. The 24-yearold suffered an inversion, basketball-type, sprain Sunday when he stepped on Dallas defender Jourdan Lewis' foot after an incomplete pass.
When Barkley suffered the injury, we thought he would be lucky to avoid a three-game IR stint. Barkley has no chance of playing this week and has an outside chance of playing Week 7. The following week against the Chiefs on Monday night seems like a reachable target for the fourth-year back.
Barkley did tell reporters that his right knee, which is recovering from a torn ACL last season, was starting to feel better during the game. This backs up what we said last year, that we expected Barkley to return to form around the middle of the 2021 season. The silver lining is his ankle injury will give his knee extra time to recover.
