The now former Patriots running back has been traded to the Los Angeles Rams for a 2022 fifth round pick and a 2022 sixth round pick. Coincidentally, the Rams previous running back when they faced the Patriots in the Super Bowl was Georgia standout Todd Gurley, as Sony Michel is also a Georgia alum. The other thing the two backs have in common is an arthritic knee. Gurley was the highest paid running back in the league with the Rams, but quickly fell out of favor. This was due to his left knee arthritis which has plagued him mightily over his career. Michel has a history of right knee arthritis, which was known before the Patriots drafted him. Now the fourth-year pro is expendable, partly because the Patriots know he does not necessarily have much left in the tank. The Rams are in need of running back depth in the short term and were willing to pay the low price to get him. Michel can play and be effective, but he is unlikely to be a bell cow. One can expect an effective year for Michel, but we do not see 20 carries for 17 games. He'll need veteran rest during the practice week and a limited workload, but he still can be explosive and effective.
