Taysom Hill Suffers Lisfranc Foot Injury, Faces 6-9 Month Recovery

Saints versatile quarterback Taysom Hill suffered a left foot Lisfranc injury in the Week 18 win over the Falcons, head coach Sean Payton confirmed Monday.

Payton told reporters that Hill needs an initial surgery and then a second surgery to remove hardware.

ProFootballDoc, Dr. David Chao, said this clearly indicates a more severe form of Lisfranc injury where there is enough displacement or separation of the bones that surgery is needed.

The list franc joint is in the mid foot area and because this is a joint that requires motion, the fixation with hardware will need to be removed usually by three months, Chao said.

The recovery timeline for this is in the six-to-nine month range, according to Chao.

The 31-year-old quarterback also had a Lisfranc injury in his right foot in college.

Hill suffered the injury while at Brigham Young University in September 2015 and missed the final 11 games of the season.

He returned for the start of the 2016 season, marking almost a full year recovery between game action for Hill, who eventually went undrafted.

Chao said the recovery timeline puts the Saints in an interesting position because No. 1 quarterback Jameis Winston had an earlier season ACL tear with a projected timeline of possibly being ready for the start of the 2022 regular season.

Now that Hill has suffered a late season injury, his recovery could stretch well into the preseason or even early regular season given how important his rushing ability is to his effectiveness, Chao said.

Hill signed a unique four-year, $40 million contract extension this season with $21.5 million in guaranteed money.

Winston is an unrestricted free agent this offseason.
