Top MLB Injury Insights of the Week

Mike Trout - SIC score 54

The new-look Angels are attempting to remain in the playoff hunt without Mike Trout, but he may not be far from a return. The three-time MVP landed on the 10-day IL on July 4 with a fractured hook of the hamate bone. That surgery has a reliable recovery and has a minimum absence of six weeks. He will hit that mark in mid-August and took “dry swings” (without a bat) on Monday.

Bo Bichette - SIC score 73

Suffered a right knee injury while decelerating on a single on July 31. Did not play on Tuesday and is heading for a 10-day IL stint, but hopefully can serve as designated hitter or pinch hit soon. By video, the Pro Baseball Docs believe Bichette is dealing with right knee patellar tendinitis, which can be managed with proper rest. New addition Paul Dejong or utility man Santiago Espinal can play shortstop until Bichette is healthy enough to return to the field.

Corey Seager - SIC score 88

Rangers’ shortstop Corey Seager has been activated off IL and will rejoin the lineup tonight for the Rangers. Seager landed on 10-day IL with a sprained right thumb on July 22. His quick activation is a good sign the injury shouldn't bother him down the stretch.

J.T. Realmuto - SIC score 91

J.T. Realmuto, the Philadelphia Phillies catcher, missed Tuesday’s contest with a gash on the palm of his right hand he suffered while sliding into second base. He will not require an IL stint and should rejoin the lineup soon.

Hunter Greene - SIC score 41

Reds’ flamethrower Hunter Greene has not pitched since mid-June because of a hip injury, but he started a rehab assignment on Tuesday. Cincinnati has set a target return date of Aug. 20 for the soon-to-be 24 year old. Greene is 2-4 this season with a 3.93 ERA.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. - SIC score 90

The 25-year-old returned from his oblique strain on July 31 and should be healthy for the stretch run. Chisholm has been limited to 45 games this season because of an early season turf toe injury along with the oblique strain. He’s hitting .247 with 9 home runs, 21 RBIs and 15 stolen bases.

Marcus Stroman - SIC score 24

Stroman is having a great year with the Cubs, but is heading to the 15-day IL for right hip inflammation. The Pro Baseball Docs project he will be out well beyond the minimum 15 days and likely will miss at least a month of action. Stroman boasts a 10-8 record with a 3.85 ERA and 111 strikeouts in 128.2 innings.
