Trae Young, Jaylen Brown Suffer Dueling Ankle Injuries, Brown Ruled Out

Hawks' star point guard Trae Young left tonight's game with 31 seconds left in the 1st quarter after suffering a left ankle sprain. Young was able to return with 6:20 left in the 2nd quarter with his ankle heavily-wrapped.

Based on initial video, Young appears to suffer a standard inversion ankle that is common in basketball, according to our ProBasketballDocs.

Young has suffered multiple sprains on both ankles, including a grade 2 lateral left ankle sprain that kept him out for 4 games in April 2021, and thus likely endured little new damage to his ankle tendons.

Based on his return tonight, he is unlikely to miss time, but if he does, it will be a short absence for the 4th-year pro.

While he has stayed in the game, Young could experience delayed swelling later in the game or in the coming days that could affect his play. In the meantime, he has scored 22 points on 8-12 shooting, showing little ill-effects from the sprain.

Celtics' star Jaylen Brown, meanwhile, left early in the game with an apparent right ankle sprain he suffered after stepping on a defender's foot on a fastbreak with 9:15 left in the 1st quarter.

He was ruled out later in the quarter, although the injury looked more severe than it was, according to our ProBasketballDocs.

Brown has also suffered multiple right ankle sprains, including several in January and February 2020.

Brown missed the final 12 games of the 2020-21 season after suffering a right ankle sprain and wrist injury on a collision with fellow Boston star Jayson Tatum on May 2, 2021.
