Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday after suffering a left shoulder injury while diving for a ball in Friday’s game against the Angels.
By video, Story suffered a left shoulder dislocation with a labrum tear when he laid out for a ball between short and third hit by Mike Trout in the bottom of the fourth inning.
He walked off with his left shoulder immobilized and underwent an MRI on Saturday that revealed a damaged labrum.
There’s hope he can avoid a stint on the 60-day IL, but it will be an issue he will deal with all season until he can undergo labrum surgery in the offseason.
Story will rehab the injury and likely change his follow through to avoid re-dislocating his left shoulder. That change could down on his power numbers, but multiple players have been able to finish the season with rehab and this swing change, including Fernando Tatis Jr. and Corbin Carroll.
The Red Sox recalled David Hamilton from AAA to take Story’s roster spot while he is out.
The former Colorado Rockies shortstop missed a majority of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in January 2023.
He was able to return in early August for the final 43 games of the season, finishing with a .203 batting average, a .250 on-base percentage and 3 home runs in 168 plate appearances.
Story also suffered a broken right wrist in July 2022 that cost him 38 games.
He hit .238 in 94 games that season with 16 home runs and a .303 on-base percentage.
