Twins' right-handed starting pitcher Chris Paddack went under the knife on Wednesday for the second time in his young career to repair a torn UCL.
Paddack left his last start on May 8 with right elbow inflammation and said last week that he was preparing for the worst, that is undergoing Tommy John surgery.
The 26-year-old was shut down last September after suffering a sprained UCL, but was unable to avoid surgery after receiving a PRP injection.
Going into his final start, Paddack had a 3.15 ERA and 15 strikeouts while allowing a .269 batting average in 20 IP.
He first underwent Tommy John surgery in 2016 as a 20-year-old for the Padres, and is the third high-profile starter in recent years to undergo the procedure a second time, joining Mike Clevinger and Nathan Eovaldi.
Clevinger recently returned from his November 2020 surgery and has a 3.21 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 14 IP across three starts.
Eovaldi also underwent his second surgery at the age of 26, and after missing all of the 2017 season, has three seasons with a sub-4.00 ERA and was fourth in Cy Young voting in 2021 after striking out 195 batters and posting a league-low 1.728 walks per nine innings in 195 IP.
