The Seahawks wide receiver exited the thrilling overtime victory over the 49ers due to a leg contusion. Head coach Pete Carroll indicated he is being monitored for swelling. The leg contusion was signnificant enough that he will stay behind at a Bay Area hospital and not fly home. It seems that the worry is for potential compartment syndrome. Compartment syndrome is where there is internal bleeding and swelling in a defined space, especially an area like the lower leg.  If pressure in the consticted area goes up high enough it can disrupt the blood flow and potentially damage nerves/muscles. It is rare but if this is the case, surgery would be needed to release the pressure but the hope is that monitoring his lower leg and keeping it elevated will make the pressure subside. The flight home potentially could complicate swelling thus the hospitalization. The Seahawks bye seems to be coming at a good time as they can celebrate their big victory over the previously undefeated 49ers and allow their star wide receiver to get healthy. If the Seahawks were playing Sunday he probably wouldn't play but with the bye this week he potentially won't miss any gametime.
