Chiefs all-pro safety Tyrann Mathieu has been ruled out for the Divisional Round game vs the Bills with a concussion.
The injury leaves Kansas City without its top defensive back against Josh Allen, Stefon Diggs, and the high-powered Bills passing attack.
Mathieu appeared to suffer the head injury on a 4th-down run by Josh Allen with 12:44 left in the 1st quarter. He took a knee to the crown of the helmet from 6-foot-3, 313-pound teammate Jarran Reed.
The 29-year-old stayed in for the next 2 plays before taking himself out, and is now being evaluated by an independent neurologist.
ProFootballDoc, Dr. David Chao – who is in Kansas City for the highly-touted contest – was surprised that the Chiefs coaching staff kept Mathieu out on the field as he appeared wobbly after the hit. You can also see Mathieu grabbing the top of his helmet immediately after the hit.
Kansas City is already without backup cornerback Rashad Fenton, who is out for the 2nd straight game with a back injury. Fenton was 4th among cornerbacks with 538 snaps and 4th overall on the team with 7 passes defended.
