Tyrann Mathieu Misses Practice, Here's How He Can Still Clear Concussion Protocol

Tyrann Mathieu, the Chiefs three-time all-pro strong safety, did not practice Wednesday while recovering from a concussion he suffered Sunday against the Bills.

To clear concussion protocol, Mathieu must log a full practice and get cleared by an independent neurologist.

Players typically do not go from missing practice to full practice in one day, meaning Mathieu will likely have to log a limited practice Thursday to have a chance to play Sunday against the Bengals.

Head coach Andy Reid told reporters Wednesday that Mathieu is "doing very well." If that means Mathieu doesn't have any lingering concussion symptoms that is a good indication that he will practice in some capacity Thursday.

If Mathieu can't play Sunday, Daniel Sorenson would likely start at strong safety. That would be a major advantage for Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and his numerous receiving options.

The Chiefs did get good news Wednesday on another member of the secondary. Slot cornerback Rashad Fenton logged a full practice Wednesday after missing the last two weeks with a back injury.

Kansas City are 7-point favorites at home against the Bengals, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
