Update: Todd Archer and Adam Schefter reported late Wednesday that Smith suffered a “severe” left hamstring injury that is at risk of costing him multiple months.
By video, Smith suffered a high-grade distal hamstring tear, according to the Pro Football Docs.
The Cowboys were reportedly initially concerned about a left ankle aggravation or left knee injury, but testing on both showed no structural damage.
Dallas all-pro left tackle Tyron Smith suffered a left leg injury late in Cowboys' practice on Wednesday and will reportedly undergo further testing.
Based on limited initial video, the Pro Football Docs are not concerned about the knee, but are concerned about a potential soft-tissue injury, specifically the calf.
The grizzled veteran had an SIC score of 88 entering training camp after missing six games in 2021 with a lingering left ankle sprain and bone spur.
The 31-year-old tackle also suffered a left ankle injury in a joint practice two weeks ago.
Smith suffered the apparent left leg injury while pushing off to set a downfield block on Leighton Vander-Esch and initially went down grabbing his high left ankle.
He limped off into the locker room, but was reportedly clear of any limp by the time he left. When asked about his health by teammate Connor McGovern, "(Smith) gave me a nice reassuring grunt like he usually does,” McGovern said.
If he does miss time, rookie lineman Tyler Smith – who got some first-team reps at left tackle during OTAs – would likely be in line to take the slot, especially after rookie tackle Matt Waletzko suffered a shoulder injury earlier this month.
Tyler Smith has missed time in camp recently with a minor ankle injury, but should return well ahead of Week 1.
The Cowboys open the 2022 season on Sept. 11 against the Buccaneers on Sunday Night Football.
