Another season, another Jimmy Garoppolo injury saga.
The new Las Vegas Raiders quarterback will be out until training camp after undergoing left foot surgery shortly after his introductory press conference with Las Vegas in mid-March, according to the Pro Football Docs.
The 31-year-old former 49ers passer has not played since suffering broken bones in his left foot while starting for the injured Trey Lance in Week 13.
He did not have surgery, as the 49ers team doctors reportedly determined surgery was unnecessary.
Upon his entry physical prior to signing with the Raiders, the team discovered that his foot was not healing to their liking and he had surgery soon after his introductory press conference on March 17.
Based on the injury and type of surgery, Garoppolo will miss all of OTAs and likely the start of training camp, according to the Pro Football Docs. While he will undoubtedly be ready for Week 1, this absence is a big deal for a quarterback joining his first new team in six seasons.
Garoppolo is likely familiar with head coach Josh McDaniels playbook from their time together with the Patriots, however OTAs are key for a quarterback to develop familiarity with the offensive line, receivers and establish adjustments at the line.
Veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers made a point to show up at OTAs with the New York Jets – something he had not done for awhile with the Packers – because of the importance of familiarity between the quarterback and his offensive unit.
Whenever Garoppolo is ready to practice, he and the Raiders will have a lot of catch up work to do ahead of the season.
In 10 starts for the 49ers last season, Garoppolo went 7-3 with 2,437 passing yards, a 67.2% completion rate, 16 touchdowns and 4 interceptions.
The Raiders are +5500 to win Super Bowl LVIII, the same odds as the Atlanta Falcons and New England Patriots, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
They are +1200 to win the AFC West, the worst odds in the division behind the Broncos at +550, the Chargers at +300 and the Chiefs at -160.
