Los Angeles Lakers star power forward Anthony Davis will reportedly be reevaluated in a month in his recovery from a right foot “stress reaction” injury.
Davis is likely dealing with a stress fracture of one of the bones in his feet, but which bone is affected remains unclear.
If he suffered a fifth metatarsal fracture he likely would have already undergone surgery and carry a much longer recovery timeline.
For now, the best news is that Davis has not required crutches or a boot during his recovery. The Lakers’ star has even been spotted in slippers recently at shootaround.
Davis’ season is not done, but a return in early-to-mid January is likely too optimistic to expect him back. If Davis does not already have a stress fracture, this stress reaction could turn into one easily if he returns too quick.
The foot is not an area of good blood flow, which is essential for healing, and his return timeline depends on which bone is affected.
Davis’ lingering soreness will need to subside, but the Lakers will also have to like what they see on MRI before allowing their nearly $38 million PF hit the floor again.
Numerous big men have been plagued by foot injuries for parts of their career (see Bill Walton or Joel Embiid) and Davis has suffered two right foot injuries in 2022.
He has also picked up numerous injuries the past two seasons, playing in 83 of a potential 188 games, but none have been related so far.
Davis appeared to be in prime form before this injury, averaging 27.4 points, 12.1 rebounds while shooting 59% from the field and 82.6% from three.
The Lakers (13-19) could sorely use his production, but Thomas Bryant or Wenyan Gabriel will have to step up in his absence.
Los Angeles is getting 8 points on the road against the Mavericks (17-16) and the over/under is 230, according to FanDuel Sportsbook.
The Lakers are +7000 to win the NBA Finals.
