The Tigers placed star shortstop Javier Báez on the 10-day IL retroactive to April 13 with a thumb injury.
The 29-year-old defensive dynamo hasn't played since jamming his right thumb during a loss to the Red Sox last Tuesday.
He was quickly ruled out for the next three contests and manager A.J. Hinch was optimistic he would return last weekend, but that didn't materialize.
Báez recently said he initially suffered the injury while celebrating his walk-off single on Opening Day before aggravating the injury about five days later.
Because Detroit marked Báez as going to the IL on the 13th, he could return as soon as this Thursday against the Yankees, although Hinch said he would likely miss the entire Yankees' series as he continues to deal with thumb soreness.
Harold Castro has started every game at shortstop in the all-star's absence. Castro, 28, has three hits in 16 at-bats this season, scoring two runs and striking out six times.
