Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will require a rib block injection to play through his rib cartilage fracture today against the Jaguars, according to the Pro Football Docs.
If he and the team elect for him to undergo a rib block injection, to numb the nerve, he can likely play without limitations.
Rib block injections, also referred to as intercostal nerve injections are fairly common throughout the NFL, according to our panel of doctors with decades of NFL experience.
Dr. David Chao personally gave Phillip Rivers over a dozen rib block injections throughout his career for various rib issues. Rivers gave Chao permission to disclose the use of the rib block injection.
The intercostal nerve injection numbs the pain of the surrounding muscle and tissue, thus allowing quarterbacks to twist and throw despite rib or abdomen injuries.
The downside once the injection wears off is the area can become more sore because the player was unaware of additional damage done during the game.
Herbert reportedly received an injection prior to practice Thursday, although it had mixed results. If he receives an injection to play against the Jaguars, it will reportedly be done with the assistance of ultrasound imaging.
Rib cartilage injuries are slower to heal than rib fractures because of low bloodflow, meaning Herbert will likely have to deal with associated pain for weeks.
Just over two years ago, Tyrod Taylor was receiving a rib block injection when his lung was accidentally punctured in the process. Justin Herbert stepped in to start that Sept. 20, 2020 game and has remained the starter ever since.
If Herbert does not play against the Jaguars, Chase Daniel will step in.
If Justin Herbert chooses to take a pain injection today, it will be done with the assistance of an ultra sound imaging monitor to guide the administering doctor to appropriate site.
Sources say Herbert received an injection to practice on a (limited) basis with mixed results.
