Star Michigan pass rusher and potential No. 1 overall pick Aidan Hutchinson made news recently when he ended his Pro Day early and skipped several private workouts after witnessing former teammate David Ojabo rupture his Achilles tendon.
His decision was understandable, especially considering his full combine participation, during which he posted “freak numbers,” according to NexGen stats, and should not by any means impact his Draft stock.
Hutchinson returned to the Maize and Blue for his senior season after suffering a fractured left ankle in Nov. 2020 that later required surgery.
The 6'6" edge showed no signs of ill-effects from the fracture and surgery, posting 55 tackles and 14 sacks over 14 games coming out of both the DE and OLB positions. He saved his best for the biggest games, sacking C.J. Stroud 3 times in Michigan’s win over Ohio State and totaling 4 tackles and 1 sack in the Big 10 championship game against Iowa.
Interestingly, Hutchinson’s father, Chris Hutchinson, former Michigan football player himself, is now an emergency room physician and provided the initial updates after the fracture.
Despite the significant 2020 ankle injury, teams slotted near or at No. 1, including the Jaguars, Lions, and Jets, will evaluate Hutchinson based solely on his elite athleticism and consistently dominant production over his collegiate career.
