Will Daniel Jones Recover From His Neck Injury In Time For Giants Training Camp?

New York Giants' quarterback Daniel Jones spoke to reporters on Monday for the first time since the team hired new head coach Brian Daboll, stating that his neck is “no longer a concern” and that he will ready for the Giants' offseason workouts later this summer.

While he would not be able to participate if training camp started today, according to ProFootballDoc, Jones has moved past his scary cervical neck strain and will be ready for an all-important 4th season as the Giants starter.

Jones missed the final 6 games of 2021 after suffering what appeared at the time to be a minor neck strain on an awkward tackle early in Week 12. He finished the contest, but was not cleared for contact in the following weeks as was expected, raising concerns both internally and with ProFootballDoc of a more serious issue.

As it turns out, the lanky dual-threat quarterback avoided a significant spinal cord injury he could have suffered if he played through the cervical ligament damage.

Jones visited spinal surgeons to discuss whether or not he would need a more aggressive approach to heal the issue, but deemed the injury minor enough to heal on its own. He was placed on IR on Dec. 20, ending his season.

The injury, as the Giants found out, heals with time, and he should be cleared about 6 months after the injury, which will come at the beginning of June. He may begin practicing as a non-contact participant in the visible red jersey when he returns.

This will be a deciding year for Jones' future in New York, as he has been inconsistent and turnover-prone in 3 seasons with his 5th-year option looming under a new regime.

Daboll was rumored to be hired because of his experience working with Josh Allen in Buffalo. Allen himself evolved from an inaccurate, run-first QB into a leading MVP candidate and the face and future of the Bills' franchise.

In 11 games last season, Jones threw for 2,428 yards and 10 touchdowns with 7 interceptions while rushing 62 times for 298 yards and 2 touchdowns.

He was able to limit his turnovers and sacks from previous seasons while raising his completion percentage, fumbling the ball 7 times while taking a sack on 5.7% of his snaps and posting a 64.3% completion rate, all improved from his tumultuous first 2 seasons.
