Justin Herbert’s right high ankle sprain continues to be a concern for the Chargers as they head into their Week 4 divisional matchup against the Chiefs.
In Week 3, Herbert aggravated his ankle when he was sacked in third quarter with a defender landing on his ankle and he left the game and did not return.
According to Head Coach Harbaugh, evaluating whether a player can perform while protecting themselves involves multiple factors, including their own readiness and mobility. Harbaugh emphasized that each injury, particularly high ankle sprains, affects players differently. He acknowledged Herbert’s resilience, noting that while some might take the decision out of the player's hands, he respects Herbert's toughness. For a quarterback, key considerations include the ability to move and push off during throws, both of which are essential to performing at a high level.
After the game Herbert left the stadium in walking boot. On Monday he had x-rays that were confirmed negative.
Although Herbert's injury hasn’t significantly worsened, his limited mobility raises questions about whether he should start.
Harbaugh and the Chargers face a critical decision—either risk further aggravating Herbert’s injury or opt for a healthier, mobile backup in Taylor Heinicke.
The game holds significant implications, as the Chargers sit at 2-1 just one game behind the Chiefs, and a win could propel them to the top of the standings. Harbaugh’s history suggests he may lean toward playing it safe by starting Heinicke, especially given the bye week ahead in Week 5 for the Chargers.
Additionally, the Chargers’ injury woes are not limited to Herbert. Key first-round picks including Joey Bosa, Rashawn Slater and Joe Alt are also dealing with injuries, further complicating the situation.
With these key players sidelined, plus the upcoming bye in NFL Week 5, we believe the Chargers will not want to risk a hobbled Herbert behind a compromised offensive line.
This week's game against the Chiefs is pivotal, but long-term health may take precedence, making it more likely that Heinicke starts, and Herbert gets additional recovery time ahead of Week 6 against the Broncos.
