Once anticipated to be one of the top receiving option next to Travis Kelce this season, Kadarius Toney’s stock with the Chiefs could not be lower at the moment.
The former Giants receiver has missed the past six games with what the team has labeled hip/ankle injuries. Toney supposedly spoke on Instagram live and disputed that he was too injured to play.
Head coach Andy Reid addressed the story recently, saying: "I actually haven't seen it. I've heard people talk about it," Reid said. "Yeah, he'll be back out there and we'll see how he does."
"Obviously he's been on the injury report, so that part is not made up by any means. But he's been working through some things and he'll be back out there."
By video, Toney did not appear to suffer a hip or ankle injury severe enough to keep him out for six weeks. He last played in Week 15 against the Patriots and finished with 2 catches for 5 yards before getting ruled out ahead of the Week 16 contest.
Next Wednesday’s injury report will be telling for Toney’s status ahead of Super Bowl LVIII. Last week, he logged a full practice on Wednesday before being downgraded to LP on Thursday and Friday. He was eventually listed as questionable but was ruled out on Saturday, the same day he was excused from team activities to welcome the birth of his first daughter.
Kansas City has used Mecole Hardman on gadget plays in place of Toney, but he had two fumbles on two touches in the Divisional Round against Buffalo.
Toney had 27 catches on 38 targets this season for 169 yards and a touchdown in 13 games.
He had 5 drops this season (13.2% of his targets). His season-high came in Week 2 when he had 5 catches for 35 yards.
The Chiefs led the league in drops at 44. Rashee Rice had 8 of those drops, followed by Travis Kelce with 7 and Toney with 5. Fifteen Chiefs receivers had at least one drop during the regular season.
