Memphis starting point guard Alex Lomax injured his left ankle in the opening round 64-53 win over Boise State.
The senior guard suffered a standard inversion ankle sprain at the end of the first half when he landed on the foot of a Boise State defender on a three-point attempt, according to the ProBasketballDocs.
Lomax went down in pain and left to the locker room shortly before halftime. He did return in the second half and played 18 minutes, finishing with 9 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists in the game.
He appeared to be moving well on the injured ankle, but the worry is for overnight swelling, according to the ProBasketballDocs.
Often with these type of sprains, players can tighten up the high tops or get the ankle taped to play through the pain.
If overnight swelling sets in, Lomax may be listed as questionable for next round's matchup on Saturday, presumably against No. 1 seed Gonzaga.
Lomax is essentially the only point guard on Memphis' roster, thus his absence would be a big loss. He averages 26.7 minutes per game, second most on the team.
The ProBasketballDocs expect him to play through the ankle injury if he's listed as questionable, but his effectiveness will depend on how much the ankle swell's between today and Saturday.
