Much has been made about the projected game time temperature for Super Bowl LVI as Southern California experiences a rare February heat wave.
However, Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc, projects that the players will not be affected by the potential mid-80s heat during game time.
First, Chao noted, dehydration and cramping typically come as the result of humidity rather than heat.
The National Weather Service forecasts that relative humidity will be 0 during the game.
Second, SoFi Stadium has a tarp over the top which limits the amount of direct sunlight players and fans are exposed to.
The hottest Super Bowl on record was played on Jan. 14, 1973 at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a fully outdoor venue.
The temperature recorded at kickoff was 84 degrees.
Lastly, the Super Bowl contains longer pre-game and halftime festivities than normal. This allows ample time for pre-game or halftime IVs, if necessary, to replenish fluids, Chao said.
Although hotter than normal, the temperature should not provide an advantage to either team during Super Bowl LVI.
