Tarik Cohen, the notoriously shifty running back and return specialist, was released by the Chicago Bears Friday on an injury settlement.
Cohen did not play last season after suffering a right knee ACL tear and fractured tibia on a special teams hit in late September 2020.
Unfortunately for the 26-year-old running back, the fact that he's about a year-and-a-half into his recovery and doesn't seem any closer to retaking the field is a bad sign, said Dr. David Chao, ProFootballDoc.
Cohen himself said in an interview that he doesn't want to return until he can play like his old self.
At this point it's unclear if Cohen can return to the speed and quickness he had in the past, but it doesn't seem likely, Chao said.
Given his small size, he likely needs to have full mobility and agility to be effective. Chicago moving on after five seasons with Cohen doesn't bode well for his chances of catching on anywhere else.
The Bears currently have much better options in David Montgomery, Khalil Herbert and Damien William.
Cohen was an All-Pro and made the Pro Bowl in 2018, his best season with Chicago. That year he had 1,169 scrimmage yards, 3 rushing touchdowns and 5 receiving touchdowns.
