Red Sox star shortstop Xander Bogaerts is suffering from hamstring soreness after Friday's Opening Day loss to the Yankees.
Bogaerts strained his right hamstring on his final at-bat, an RBI single in the top of the 10th inning, and was replaced by Christian Arauz in the bottom of the inning.
The game ended on a walk-off single up the middle by Josh Donaldson that slid right past a diving Arauz to give New York a 6-5 win.
The 29-year-old said after the game that while he is sore, he believes he will be able to play tomorrow, although that decision will likely come down to the results of the MRI Bogaerts took after the contest.
Bogaerts said the injury may have happened while he was pushing to run hard out of the box after his 10th-inning single: “I don't know if it's because I didn't do much running during the games in Spring Training… I got on base today a couple of times and I ran pretty hard right out of the gate.”
This would be another injury potentially caused by the significantly shortened prep time, a certainty that the ProBaseballDocs detailed earlier in the spring.
Bogaerts, who is in the midst of tense contract negotiations with Boston brass, went 3-5 with 2 runs and 1 RBI out of the 3rd spot in the order. Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, and new addition Trevor Story make up one of the best offensive infields in baseball.
