In a tense moment during the New Orleans Pelicans' play-in tournament game versus the Los Angeles Lakers, with just 3:19 remaining, Zion Williamson left the court after sinking a floater and requested to be subbed out.
Despite the abrupt exit, video analysis of the play did not reveal any obvious signs of injury. The incident has since been attributed to left hamstring issue, and Williamson is scheduled to undergo imaging to determine the extent of the issue.
The Pelicans announced on Wednesday that Williamson will not play Friday's must win Play-In game due to a left hamstring injury suffered in the final minutes of Tuesday's game.
Shortly after the team announced that Williamson suffered a hamstring strain and he will be reevaluated in approximately two weeks therefore his return will depend on if the Pelicans can win this Friday, but also go deep the best-of-seven Round 1 playoff game against the Thunder, or potentially progress to Round 2 before his hamstring has recovered.
Returning too soon would increase the re-injury risk so the team will likely give Williamson more time to recover and assess their situation in the best of seven game series, similar to what is likely done by the Bucks in their management of Giannis' Antetokounmpo calf injury.
