San Francisco 49ers Deebo Samuel reportedly broke his foot today and it is believed to be a Jones’ fracture which will require surgery. There is a chance that Samuel will be back early in the regular season, but he is likely to start the 2020 season on PUP. He will certainly be placed on active PUP with a good chance to start season on reserve PUP. There are lots of cases of rushing back, but that leads to a high chance of recurrent surgery. It is also hard to be effective when not 100%. We expect Samuel to miss at least the first 6 weeks to assure a strong return for 2020 season. In the end, this is the best solution for 49ers as they will have him when it matters late in the season. This injury could be called “the wide receiver fracture” as it has effected many wideouts over the years including Julio Jones, Julian Edelman, Dez Bryant and dozens of others. We expect a productive second half of the season for Samuel but will be slow out the gates due to the fracture. Fantasy owners may need to consider finding a replacement until he returns to form while bettors may look at the under on the Samuel receiving yards prop.
